3 Minute Video

For my three minute video I went back home to Ocean City, New Jersey and filmed the after math of sandy. Although it was 2 weeks later the island was still recovering from the recording breaking storm. I filmed on a Go Pro Hero 2 that allowed me to go under water and get footage. This video shows how even after a major storm, beauty and peace can be found at the shore. By combining footage of the natural landscape as well as the damages boardwalks, docks, and eroded beach you feel as if the beauty and serenity mask all the destruction that took place in that very spot two weeks earlier. The footage was edited in Final Cut Pro and mixed with separately recorded audio tracks. Due to the heavy wind the day of filming, original audio was unable to be used. Fortunately this was not an issue because by adding the sounds of waves, bells, wind, seagulls, and people I was able to create the type of day that I wanted to capture. Also below is a screen shot of part of my FCP timeline as I edited multiple layers of video and audio.

30 Second Edit

My 30 second video is filmed outside the Library and on the Walk outside of Hodson. I filmed all the natural peace that Washington College has on its campus but it is interrupted by the sound of construction the whole time. You can't help but notice how annoying the sound is and it almost gets to a point of ruining the visuals because of how ugly sounding it is. The sound of construction distorts the natural beauty of the campus, something that many of the students have been dealing with the entire first semester as the library has been under construction. At the very end of the clip you hear the construction noise fade out and you are left with natural sounds and the image of plants swaying in the wind. This represents the end of the construction on campus and how we will now be able to see our campus in the best light possible again.

Stop Motion Transformation Animation

For this assignment I chose to make a stop motion animation which is a video made up of individual photos taken with the subject changing ever so slightly in each one. I had originally started working on a campus tour using buildings around campus which I had to scrap after the hurricane. Next I started a stop motion about the daily wake up routine of a college student. After I had started it my subject had to go home and deal with the hurricane which left me with what I ended up making my project. It starts as origami. You watch as the boat is built from a piece of paper. It transforms from just a piece of white paper into a boat. Another transformation occurs when the camera zooms out and there are three boats not just one. The idea of transformation continues as the boat drives around the floor (intentionally blue to represent water) and then appears on a ledge with waves in the background. After it drives along for a little it falls off a waterfall and into a basin of water (toilet was the best I could do). Here they float around and struggle stay afloat and alive. This unintentionally symbolizes a hurricane wrecking a boat, the cause for me picking this topic to begin with.
